Professional Experience

Amazon | Nov 2020 – Present

Business Intelligence Engineer II | Oct 2024 - Current

  • Owning all business intelligence and data engineering efforts for 3 safety telematics programs. Directly supporting operations teams as SME.

Business Intelligence Engineer / Business Analyst | Aug 2021 - Oct 2024

  • Architecture Optimization: Spearheaded data architecture optimization for on-road safety telematics pipeline, resulting in an 80% reduction in processing time.

  • Pipeline Integration: Designed, built, and implemented pipelines for multiple programs. These are scalable solutions with standardized parameters. Integrated various data sources within and across programs.

  • Insurance Reporting: Created an insurance rate card report which is used to track rate changes for Amazon's delivery service program. This is a multi-billion dollar insurance program supporting a delivery service which is now larger than both Fedex and UPS.

  • Cross-Org Reporting and Visualization: Collaborated with 10 stakeholders to define requirements for a single safety report. Developed automated reports using Redshift SQL, Python, Lambda, and Glue, providing insights to 2,000+ fleet companies and their 150,000+ drivers. Replicated this process to create similar reports for two additional programs.

  • Data Mining and Automation: Extracted insights from in-app Amazon customer feedback, leading to new initiatives at the VP level. Converted the VP’s request into multiple ETL automations which automate data ingestion and defect actioning in Salesforce. This increased defect identification and follow-up actions by > 100% with no additional load on operations teams.

  • A/B Testing: Most of my requests start with a preliminary deep dive into the requirements. The process often requires data mining, A/B testing, and a variety of other statistical approaches. This allows us to prioritize the most important projects while managing a backlog of tickets which far exceed available BI resources.

  • CI/CD Deployment Pipeline Creation: Implemented a CI/CD pipeline using Maestro for enhanced development, testing, version control, and deployment. This is an internal orchestration tool which provides a framework similar to a combination of dbt, Airflow, Git, and Snowflake.

  • Operations Reporting: Created a performance dashboard for the Driver Conduct & Safety operations team. Built ETL pipeline using SQL, Python, Lambda, AWS CloudFormation, and AWS Transfer Family. Built a series of staging tables for metric aggregations using KPIs, goals, and weighted averages. Used row-level security to hide PII in QuickSight visuals. Provided operations team with the ability to monitor performance, deep dive, identify workflow gaps, coach, and improve SLA over time.

  • Innovation: Created the team’s most-utilized QuickSight visualization dashboard, saving 10,000+ productive hours per year and achieving estimated savings of > $500,000.

  • Mentorship: Host of a monthly mentor session for Jr. employees. Previously facilitated onboarding for 5 senior engineers. Hosted a live training for entire BI team and built 3 formal training documents used by the team.

  • Orchestration: Utilized Git CLI commands with dbt to submit code reviews via pull requests.

  • Flex Insurance: Currently supporting insurance program with Flex app insurance infrastructure design and data intake. Conducting analysis and coordinating with various partner teams.

Trust & Safety Analyst | Nov 2020 – Aug 2021

  • Workflow Automation: Streamlined processes by mapping 150,000 drivers to delivery vehicles via SQL stored procedure, reducing backlog by > 50% and improving SLA adherence.

  • Safety Analyses: Analyzed high-severity safety incidents, leveraging data to make informed decisions and improve documentation.

  • Team-Level Reporting: Automated Excel reports into QuickSight, enhancing reporting efficiency.

Uber | Apr 2017 - Nov 2020
Senior Analyst, Trust & Safety

  • Safety Data Consulting: I was selected 3 years in a row to visit our HQ in San Francisco and consult 50+ leaders throughout the company. This included a session with Thuan Pham (CTO) in which I presented a security flaw built into the design of the Uber app. I also consulted the author responsible for publishing Uber’s first Public Safety Data Report.

  • SQL Analysis: Designed and executed SQL to locate and track missing persons, suspected criminals, and other persons of interest. Utilized partitions with Apache Hive to quickly and efficiently analyze PetaBytes of data.

  • Documentation: Compiled detailed JIRA reports outlining my decision-making process for legal teams, claims, local law enforcement agencies, and the FBI. Reports included the results of data analyses, facts gathered during interviews, and my comparison of these two data sets against one another.

  • Fraud Analysis: Used financial data, telematics, and device associations to identify a fraud scheme. Documented and escalated, facilitating policy changes and $40+ million cost savings to date.

  • Data Mentor: Led multiple rounds of new hire onboarding. Also hosted a software training session for a group of ~25 employees to facilitate Uber’s acquisition of Jump bikes in April 2018.

Many Roles

  • Schnucks: Worked 5+ days per week while attending college full-time. I rotated through most departments in the store during my 4 years of tenure here.

  • Musician: I played approximately 50 concerts as a guitarist in a band during college. This is where I first learned HTML, CSS, and Search Engine Optimization. We also recorded music in Kentucky, Illinois, and Ohio. And we sold a variety of merchandise across the Midwest and South. Despite living in a town of 7,000 people, we were able to grow our social media presence to 30,000 followers by 2011.

  • Luxury Watch Fabrication: I manufactured metal buckles used on leather WWII ammo pouch watch straps for Panerai watches. More information about the straps, and my boss Kevin, can be found here. This job started when I was in high school and continued through college, funding much of my study abroad experience.
